Jim Molloy is a studio and plein air painter living in Miller Place, NY. After many years of working in commercial and technical illustration, Jim decided to pursue fine art. He started painting in 2005, learning to paint by studying the work of old masters and contemporary artists.
Jim specializes in landscape and nautical work, as well as depicting scenes with an "Americana" feeling. He finds that his plein air work is often very different from his studio pieces, with his plein air paintings having a much "looser" feel and sometimes more vibrant colors. He enjoys painting outdoors, as he learns something new each time and can carry this experience back to the studio. Jim draws his inspiration from the many scenic areas and historic sites that are the foundation of the landscape of the New York and New England areas.
"I like to try to find and capture the beauty and simplicity of the world around us, and to express that through my work. If my paintings can provide someone with a place to escape from their everyday life, I have succeeded."
Jim is a member of the Salmagundi Club of New York, Oil Painters of America, Guild Hall of East Hampton, and the Art League of Long Island, and is on the artist’s advisory board for the Long Island Museum LIM Arts program in Stony Brook, NY. He has earned numerous awards for his work including awards adjudicated by prestigious judges Peter Trippi of Fine Arts Connoisseur, Lilly Wei of Art in America and ARTNews and by noted painter April Gornik. Jim’s work has been on display in exhibitions, galleries and museums on Long Island, in Manhattan, Connecticut, Maryland, Florida, and in the Netherlands. His work is in private collections around the world, and is part of the permanent collection of Stony Brook University Hospital.
